Compliance

1. International Bulk SMS Regulations

Sending Bulk SMS messages internationally requires compliance with each country’s telecommunications and privacy laws. These may include:

  • Time-of-day restrictions
  • Sender ID registration
  • Language and content limitations
  • Mandatory opt-in and opt-out mechanisms

Customers are responsible for understanding and complying with their country’s SMS regulations. Consult your national communications authority or industry body for guidance.

2. South African Compliance & WASPA

In South Africa, the Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) enforces strict standards:

  • Opt-in: Consent must be voluntary, informed, and specific
  • No unsolicited messages — numbers from third-party databases without consent are prohibited
  • Proof of consent — retain signed forms, web submissions, or timestamped confirmations
  • Opt-out: Include a simple, low-cost method (e.g., reply “STOP”)
  • DNC List: Respect WASPA’s Do Not Contact registry
  • Recent Relationship Clause: Only transactional messages allowed unless broader consent is given

Visit WASPA for full compliance guidelines.

🌐 Country-Specific Considerations

  • France: No SMS on Sundays
  • Malaysia: Message headers must clarify no charges
  • South Africa: WASPA enforces strict opt-in and content rules
  • United States: TCPA and CTIA guidelines mandate express consent and prohibit shared short codes

We advise all customers to consult their local regulations and ensure compliance before launching international SMS campaigns.
